Arctic Alaska and Eurasian Orogens (2015–2018)
Victoria Pease
The Uralian, Caledonian, and Timanian orogens disappear beneath the Arctic Ocean.
The tectonic development of the Arctic regions remains one of the major unsolved tectonic problems on Earth today. One approach to solving this problem is to determine how the continental blocks now surrounding the Arctic Ocean fit together in the past. Recognizable features, such as orogenic belts, are particularly useful markers. The Timanide, Caledonide, and Uralide orogens are recognized in Eurasia to strike northwards towards the Arctic continental shelves, but are lost at the shelf-ocean basin transition. This international project investigates with our partners whether or not these orogens can be found in Arctic Alaska.
